You can order an NHS repeat prescription from your pharmacy in many different ways.

Find out how to get a repeat prescription online, how much prescriptions cost and how your local pharmacist can help you without having to see your GP.

How to order a repeat prescription

The preferred ways of ordering your prescription are as follows (in order of preference):

NHS App or NHS App Online

This is our most preferred way of receiving prescription requests.

Patient Access

Please follow the link below to login or register for Patient Access online services.  Please note if registering for first time use, you will also need to come into the surgery with 2 forms of ID before this can be set up.

Please note the NHS App is preferred over Patient Access as it offers the same services, but you are able to register without having to come into the surgery with 2 forms of ID.

Use Patient Access to order a prescription

Using our online consultation platform

Select the tile 'Prescription requests’ and provide as much information as possible, taking care to spell the medication correctly and provide the required dosage.

Avoid Delays - If you are requesting a medication that is not on your regular list, or a medication that you have not had for some time, or you are requesting a medication early, please give a reason for your request.

When will your prescription be sent to the pharmacy?

You must allow at least 72 hours for the practice to safely prepare your prescription (see table below for the estimated time that the prescription will be ready.)

Please note that pharmacies vary in the time they take to provide you with your medication - this can be up to 1 week

Nominating a pharmacy

When you order a repeat prescription online, you will have to nominate a pharmacy to prepare your prescription and for you to pick it up from.

You can nominate a pharmacy by using the NHS App or logging into the NHS website using a web browser. A high street pharmacy is where you collect your prescriptions in person. If you have chosen an online-only pharmacy, then they will send your prescription in the post.

For more information about nominating a pharmacy, visit the Nominating a Pharmacy page on the NHS website.

How your pharmacy can help

Pharmacists are qualified healthcare professionals who can help you with minor health concerns. They can offer medical advice and over-the-counter medicines for minor illnesses like coughs, colds, tummy problems and aches and pains.

For symptoms that are more serious, we suggest visiting your GP or nurse. You can book an appointment by going to our Appointments page.

Prescription charges

The NHS prescription charges apply to England only.

The Government provides help for those who have difficulty paying NHS prescriptions. You can find out more about whether you're entitled to support from the Government on the NHS Prescription Charges page on the NHS website.

More information and advice about NHS England prescription charges are on the Who can get free prescription page on the NHS website.

Questions about your prescription

We are available to help with any enquiries relating to your prescription, such as:

  • Urgent prescription related issues
  • Missing medication
  • Errors on a prescription such as wrong item or dosage
  • Clarifying medication
  • Changes after hospital discharge
  • Questions about medication availability or substitutions
  • Out of stock items
  • General concerns about your medication.

You can contact us on our Prescription Enquiry Line 01803 495 400 choosing option 2 between the hours of 9.30am - 12.30pm.

Please note our Prescription Enquiry Line is not to be used for ordering repeat medication.

You can find more information about prescriptions on the NHS website.

Prescription prepayment certificates

If you need more than 13 prescribed medicines in a year, you will save money with this.

A single prescription is £9.90, a 3 month prepayment is £32.05 and a 12 month prepayment is £114.50.

Click on Prescription Prepayment Application and follow the application process at the bottom of the page.

Over the counter medication

Your GP, nurse or pharmacist will not generally give you a prescription for over the counter medicines. Even if you qualify for free prescriptions.

Instead, over the counter medicines are available to buy in a pharmacy or supermarket. The team of health professionals at your local pharmacy can offer help and advice to manage minor health concerns. If your symptoms suggest it’s more serious, they’ll ensure you get the care you need. Please help the NHS to use resources sensibly.
