Emergency services

Emergency and out of hours medical care when we are closed

Non Emergency

If you need medical advice but it is not urgent, you can call NHS 111.

You can speak to someone for help with your health problem, and they will tell you what to do next.

The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is free to call.

Minor Injuries

We cannot treat minor injuries at Mayfield Medical Centre.

If you have an accident, strain, sprain, or other minor injury, please go to a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU).

We do not have the right equipment, such as x-ray machines, which are often needed to check these injuries.

It is important to visit an MIU as soon as possible if you are hurt.

MIUs are available at Newton Abbot Hospital, Totnes Hospital and Torbay Hospital.

Emergencies

If you are seriously hurt, very sick, or in danger, you should call 999 straight away.

You can also go to your nearest Accident and Emergency (A&E) department.

Only call 999 if it is a real emergency. Do not call 999 for non-urgent medical help.

Emergency prescriptions

You can get an emergency supply of a repeat prescription from 111 online (NHS website).

When to call NHS 111

You can call 111 or get help from 111 online (NHS website) if you're not sure what to do and if you think you need medical help right now. You can also call 111 if our surgery is closed (out-of-hours).

You will be directed to the best place to get help, depending on your medical issue.

111 can't issue fit notes or book, change or cancel an appointment. You can do these online on our website.

When to go to A&E

You should always go to A&E for serious injuries and life-threatening emergencies. These can include:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Fits that aren’t stopping
  • Chest pain
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Severe bleeding
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Severe burns or scalds.
